"By perseverance the snail reached the ark." - Charles Spurgeon

Sundays Sermon Podcast

Calvary Chapel Kampala
  • 1 Peter 1 "Our Living Hope"
"We all remember Peter, that disciple that opened his mouth too much with Jesus. Peter later, however, because one of the chief pillars of the early church. Peter and Paul were the two major apostles in bringing the gospel to the Jews (Peter) and Gentiles (Paul). The themes are hope, holiness, and suffering. This letter was mainly to bring encouragement and renewed motivation to live in Godliness no matter what the circumstances"
  • Nehemiah 13 "Cleaning House"
"When you clean your house do you only have to do it once and then it remains clean? No. There is dirt around here and messy people. It takes a continual maintenance and cleaning. When you take a bath do you only have to do it the first time and then you don't have to bathe anymore? No, we get dirty living in this world. We need to keep on cleaning or we stink and become grotesque. The people had made many promises in chapter 10 of what they were going to do for God and how they were going to live. Unfortunately, when Nehemiah went back to report to the King the people had turned quickly back to the sin and impurity that they had said they would not do. Through God's Word, and spiritual leadership, God's people were going to clean house again. This chapter is about cleaning that which was rebuilt. It is a maintenance process to examine your life, family, church, and leadership to make sure they are according to the standard of purity that God has shown us in His Word. "
  • Nehemiah 11-12 "Rebuilding Together"
"The work of rebuilding is not something we can do alone. We need God obviously, but we also need one another. There are a few lasting lessons that we can take with us about rebuilding our lives. We are given a reminder of those lessons in these final chapters. The people were now right with God, and together they continued in the day-to-day decisions that made this rebuilding last. Let us be reminded that: Rebuilding Together Needs People. Rebuilding Together Needs Praise. Rebuilding Together Needs Provisions."
Esther 8-10

Esther Chapters 8-10 “The Enemy Has Been Defeated”

  1. I) The Enemy is Defeated, but Still Deadly (8:1-8)

A) Haman was defeated, but his plans were still active. This is similar to our enemy Satan.

  1. Jesus defeated Satan at the cross

& 1 John 3:8 “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

& John 12:31 “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

& Colossians 2:14-15 “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

  • That means that the believer positioned in Jesus has the power to overcome the Devil…in Jesus name!

  1. Satan is still active in his destructive plans

& 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

& Revelation 12:12 “Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

  • God has not brought permanent judgment yet because some of Satan’s followers still need to get saved!

& 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

  1. Satan will be permanently defeated in two phases
  • Bound for 1,000 years

& Revelation 20:1-3 “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.”

  • Thrown into the lake of fire

& Revelation 20:10 “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

B) Haman’s decree was not erased or forgotten, it was overpowered by another decree

  1. The death decree of Satan against Adam (and all of mankind through him) was overpowered by the decree of Jesus on the cross.

& Genesis 2:17 “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

& Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

& Romans 5:14-15 “Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.”

  1. II) We Have the Ability to Fight Back (8:9-14)

A) So fight! (Verses 9-14)

& Ephesians 6:10-13 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

B) There is Gladness (Verses 15-17)

  1. Overcoming sin and Satan makes a person truly happy
    1. There’s a health-food restaurant out in the northeast with a billboard that says, “Eat here and live a long life!” Not wanting to be outdone, the barbeque place next-door put up a sign that reads: “Eat here and die happy!”

  1. III) The Opposite Happens with God (9:1-10)

A) From death to life

  1. And it’s not for the plunder! (see verses 10, 15, 16)

& 1 Tim 6:5 “and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.”

  1. IV) Keep Fighting (9:11-17)

A) Esther requested a continuation of the victory over the enemy

  1. Our battle is not just one day, it’s day to day

V) Remember the Victory (9:18-32)

A) The feast of Purim was set up to remember what God did for the Jews

  1. We have a feast of remembrance too, it’s called the Lords supper

& Luke 22:19 “And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

  1. VI) Remembering You (10:1-3)

A) We remember what the Lord did, but people will also remember what you do for the Lord

  1. What will be your legacy…did you fulfill your purpose for such a time as this?
