Salvation is the work of God for man; it is not the work of man for God. --- Lewis Sperry Chafer

Sundays Sermon Podcast

Calvary Chapel Kampala
  • 1 Peter 1 "Our Living Hope"
"We all remember Peter, that disciple that opened his mouth too much with Jesus. Peter later, however, because one of the chief pillars of the early church. Peter and Paul were the two major apostles in bringing the gospel to the Jews (Peter) and Gentiles (Paul). The themes are hope, holiness, and suffering. This letter was mainly to bring encouragement and renewed motivation to live in Godliness no matter what the circumstances"
  • Nehemiah 13 "Cleaning House"
"When you clean your house do you only have to do it once and then it remains clean? No. There is dirt around here and messy people. It takes a continual maintenance and cleaning. When you take a bath do you only have to do it the first time and then you don't have to bathe anymore? No, we get dirty living in this world. We need to keep on cleaning or we stink and become grotesque. The people had made many promises in chapter 10 of what they were going to do for God and how they were going to live. Unfortunately, when Nehemiah went back to report to the King the people had turned quickly back to the sin and impurity that they had said they would not do. Through God's Word, and spiritual leadership, God's people were going to clean house again. This chapter is about cleaning that which was rebuilt. It is a maintenance process to examine your life, family, church, and leadership to make sure they are according to the standard of purity that God has shown us in His Word. "
  • Nehemiah 11-12 "Rebuilding Together"
"The work of rebuilding is not something we can do alone. We need God obviously, but we also need one another. There are a few lasting lessons that we can take with us about rebuilding our lives. We are given a reminder of those lessons in these final chapters. The people were now right with God, and together they continued in the day-to-day decisions that made this rebuilding last. Let us be reminded that: Rebuilding Together Needs People. Rebuilding Together Needs Praise. Rebuilding Together Needs Provisions."
II Chronicles 33-34

2 Chronicles Chapters 33-34 “The Importance of Repentance”

  1. I) Manasseh’s Wickedness (33:1-9)

A) He was one of the most evil kings in Israel’s history

  1. II) Turning to God (33:10-20)

A) God is speaking to people but they don’t listen (10)

  1. This is the reason why so many continue in their sin and end up in Hell

& Matthew 13:14-15 “And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive;  15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.'”

  1. Are you listening?

  1. B) What will it take for you to turn? (11-13)
    1. God sent a judgment upon Manasseh to humble him and cause him to turn to God.
  • We often only turn to God during times of affliction. If that is the case, then God will bring affliction.

& Psalms 119:67 “Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.”

  1. When you humble yourself and repent God will hear and accept you

& James 4:8-10 “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”

  1. C) True repentance means changing your life, not just your mind (14-17)

D) Manasseh repented and was forgiven before God, but he still left a terrible legacy, and a mostly wasted life. (18-20)

  1. Our sin has consequences. It doesn’t just disappear
  • Jesus had to die for it
  • Your reputation and legacy will suffer because of it
  1. What will people remember about you?

  1. III) Like Father, Like Son (33:21-25)

A) Sadly, Manasseh’s son only learned from his sin, not his repentance.

  1. Another reason to take sinful conduct seriously.

  1. IV) Josiah: A Godly King(34:1-7)

A) He started following the Lord while he was still young.

  1. Let us take children seriously and teach them to follow the Lord at a young age.

& Psalms 71:5 “For You are my hope, O Lord GOD; You are my trust from my youth.”

& Lamentations 3:25-27 “The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. 26 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man to bear The yoke in his youth.”

V) Discovering the Book of the Law (34:8-28)

A) They were building God’s house (8-13)

  1. The physical construction was important, but not as important as building people spiritually through teaching God’s Word.

& Ephesians 2:19-22 “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21  in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

  1. B) We need to “find” God’s Word again (14-28)
    1. And read it. (see vs. 18)
    2. God’s Word gets results (19-21)

& Jeremiah 23:29 "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”

& Isaiah 55:11 “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

  1. The message: a choice between wrath and peace (22-28)
  • Often it is helpful to have someone explain God’s word accurately.

& Nehemiah 8:8 “So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.”

  • There is really only two options in life. To be on God’s side, or to be against Him.

& John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

  1. VI) Taking a Stand to Obey God’s Word (34:29-33)

A) There is an opportunity for us to commit to honoring the Bible again today

& Psalms 138:2 “I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.”
