2 Kings Chapters 17:1-18:8 “Why Do God’s People Fall?”
- I. Israel Is Defeated and Taken Captive by Assyria (17:1-6)
- 1. This is the end of the Northern Kingdom of Israel
- Hoshea tried to come out from the yoke of Assyria but it was too late. Assyria reminds us of sins power to take us captive.
- First they were the servants of Assyria
- Romans 6:15-16 “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”
- Then they were destroyed and taken away by Assyria
- James 1:14-15 “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
- After years and years of sinful rebellion against God they have finally fallen.
- God is longsuffering
- 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
- But if you continue without repentance you will eventually suffer the consequences.
- Galatians 6:7-8 “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”
- II. There are Reasons Why Christians Fall (17:7-23)
- 1. Worldliness - They walked in the ways of the other nations (7-12)
- Worldliness is walking in the ways of those who do not walk after God
- 1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
- Ephesians 2:1-3 “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”
- Worldliness is done in secret, hidden from us but not God! (9)
- Romans 2:16 “…God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”
- 2. Wordlessness – They left all the commandments of the Lord (13-18)
- The greatest reason why people fall is that they forsake God’s word and substitute it for something else.
- Psalms 1:1-3 “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.”
- Joshua 1:7-8 “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
- 3. Wrong Leadership – They walked in the ways of Jeroboam (19-23)
- Who are you following? What advice to you receive? The answers to those questions will have a great effect on your walk with God.
- III. There are Consequences when Christians Fall (17:24-41)
- 1. Unbelievers will be effected
- They will be judged (24-26)
- This is the terrible fate of those who do not love God. That is why it is so important for us to be busy about our Fathers business of rescuing people.
- They will not respect your warning (27-32)
- How can they respect us if we behave the same way that they do?
- Romans 2:21-24 “You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say, "Do not commit adultery," do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For "the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you," as it is written.”
- Them may make a profession of faith, but it will not be genuine
- Many people in churches today are “fearing the Lord” but following other gods at the same time!
- IV. There is Hope When Christians Fall (18:1-8)
- 1. When one falls another rises (1-8)
- He did what was right in the sight of God
- We can have hope that even when people are falling all around us God is raising up others for His name.
- And the others will be more Godly then all who were before them.
