Sundays Sermon Podcast

Calvary Chapel Kampala
  • 1 Peter 1 "Our Living Hope"
"We all remember Peter, that disciple that opened his mouth too much with Jesus. Peter later, however, because one of the chief pillars of the early church. Peter and Paul were the two major apostles in bringing the gospel to the Jews (Peter) and Gentiles (Paul). The themes are hope, holiness, and suffering. This letter was mainly to bring encouragement and renewed motivation to live in Godliness no matter what the circumstances"
  • Nehemiah 13 "Cleaning House"
"When you clean your house do you only have to do it once and then it remains clean? No. There is dirt around here and messy people. It takes a continual maintenance and cleaning. When you take a bath do you only have to do it the first time and then you don't have to bathe anymore? No, we get dirty living in this world. We need to keep on cleaning or we stink and become grotesque. The people had made many promises in chapter 10 of what they were going to do for God and how they were going to live. Unfortunately, when Nehemiah went back to report to the King the people had turned quickly back to the sin and impurity that they had said they would not do. Through God's Word, and spiritual leadership, God's people were going to clean house again. This chapter is about cleaning that which was rebuilt. It is a maintenance process to examine your life, family, church, and leadership to make sure they are according to the standard of purity that God has shown us in His Word. "
  • Nehemiah 11-12 "Rebuilding Together"
"The work of rebuilding is not something we can do alone. We need God obviously, but we also need one another. There are a few lasting lessons that we can take with us about rebuilding our lives. We are given a reminder of those lessons in these final chapters. The people were now right with God, and together they continued in the day-to-day decisions that made this rebuilding last. Let us be reminded that: Rebuilding Together Needs People. Rebuilding Together Needs Praise. Rebuilding Together Needs Provisions."
II Kings 8-9

2 Kings Chapters 8-9 “The Wicked Heart of Man”

  1. I. God Never Stops Being Good to You (8:1-6)

  1. 1. God warned the woman and told her to leave
    1. This wasn’t easy for the woman. All that she had would be taken away if she left
    2. You never lose when you listen to God!

  1. 2. God set up a divine appointment
    1. Gehezi’s story about Elisha and the woman came just before the woman entered the room.

  1. 3. God restored the woman’s property to her
    1. When you give something up for God you will never be sorry. Don’t be afraid to make sacrifices.

  1. II. Hazael’s Wicked Heart (8:7-15)

  1. 1. The king was sick and sent for Elisha
    1. His attitude changed at the end of his life. Let us learn that we shouldn’t give up on people, no matter how hostile they seem toward us.

  1. 2. Elisha sees Hazael’s wicked heart
    1. The king wasn’t going to die from the sickness but from murder.
    2. Elisha sees his heart
  • He knew that Hazael would be the king, but he didn’t realize what wickedness was inside of his heart
  • If we could see our hearts we would weep from the wickedness that we would see there.
    • The heart is desperately wicked
    • Yet we think that we are pretty good people on the inside…wrong. The only think good about us is the Lord and His work of grace by the Holy Spirit.

  1. III. The Joram’s and Ahaziah (8:16-29)

  1. 1. Jehoram of Judah (16-24)

  1. 2. Ahaziah reigns (25-29)

  1. IV. Jehu is Anointed King over Israel (9:1-13)

  1. 1. The son of a prophet went to deliver the message
    1. We need to get ready (1)
  • This is done by learning the word and having the Spirit’s power
  1. We will be going to people who are powerful and influential (2)
  • But we must not be intimidated. We have the message that can change their lives!
  1. The Spirit will give us the words to say when the time is right
  • Some believe that these words in verses 7-10 were inspired by the Holy Spirit since they were not told to him by Elisha.
  1. Our message may not be popular to some (7-10)
  • But we mustn’t water down the message to sooth itching ears. Let us tell it like it is.
  1. Others will make fun of us and call us “mad men” (11)
  • But the rest of the world is truly “mad”

  1. 2. Jehu and his men receive the message

V. Jehu Defeats Joram and Ahaziah (9:14-29)

  1. 1. No peace for the wicked (14-26)
    1. There is no peace for those who do wickedly. You can’t expect for life to be  free from problems if you do things wickedly.
    2. Jesus is driving furiously toward the wicked. He is coming to repay them for all of the evil that they have done.
  • Isa 63:1-4
  1. Joram wanted to make peace but it was too late. He, and his house, were guilty of terrible wickedness and must be punished.
  • When Jesus comes back it will be too late to try and make peace. His offer is only available today.

    1. Zimri was the man who assassinated King Baasha of Israel (1 Kings 16:9-12)
    2. Zimri was also quickly overthrown after seven days. Possibly Jezebel was insulting him and letting him know that his reign would not last.

  1. 2. “is it peace”
    1. It can never be peace as long as jezebel is alive
  • Rev. 2:20-23

  1. 3. Even the most wicked and powerful people are easily brought down by God
    1. Just as the prophecy said, Jezebel was destroyed and eaten by dogs. (1 Kings 21:23)
