“Faith During the Famine – Seven Steps to Get You Through”
2 Kings Chapters 6-7
- I. Before the Famine Get to Know the Power of Your God (6:1-23)
- 1. The floating ax head (Verses 1-7)
- 2. The Lord knows all (Verses 8-12)
- His omniscience can give us great comfort in time of trial. He know the outcome, and says it’s good!
- Jeremiah 31:17 “There is hope in your future, says the LORD…”
- 3. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them (Verses 13-23)
- We need the eyes of faith to see the unseen
- Before this servant’s eyes were opened he had given up hope
- Pray for eyes to see.
- Ephesians 1:18-19 “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power”
- God delivered an entire army into the hands of one man
- One with God is a majority!
- 1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
- Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
- II. See the Depth of Your Need and Understand that You Can Not Bring Yourself Out of It (6:24-29)
- 1. See their desperate condition (Verses 24-29)
- They had exhausted all of their resources.
- Our best isn’t good enough.
- 2. See that even the king could not change a thing (Verses 26-27)
- Rather than look to man for help to our problems we should look to God.
- III. Don’t Blame God for Your Problems (6:30-33)
- 1. The king wanted to kill Elisha because he was a prophet of God (Verses 30-32)
- 2. The king gave up hope (Verse 33)
- Why should you wait on the Lord? Because He is coming!
- Psalms 27:14 “Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!”
- IV. Hear and Believe the Promises of God (7:1-2)
- 1. God wants to do the impossible
- Haven’t you read His word?
- 2. Take care that we don’t doubt one letter of His word
- The Bible is always true, and God’s promises will not fail.
- Romans 3:4 “…Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar…”
- Matthew 5:18 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”
- The man didn’t believe, and didn’t enjoy the fulfillment of the promise
- In many ways our current condition will be made worse by not believing that God’s heart for us is good, and giving all of our worry to Him.
- Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
V. Take a Step of Faith, Don’t Just Sit There in Your Misery! (7:3-8)
- 1. Nothing will happen if we just sit. (Verses 3-4)
- God want’s to do all of the work through us…but we need to step out in faith.
- We need to step out in faith and work according to His working
- Colossians 1:29 “To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.”
- Examples of others in the OT from Hebrews 11
- What if Noah never built the ark? (Heb. 11:7)
- What if Abraham hadn’t journeyed out of his house to the land of promise? (Heb. 11:8-10)
(iii) What if Moses’ parents hadn’t of placed him in the basket and sent him down the river? (Heb.11:23)
(iv) What if Joshua and the people hadn’t of walked around the walls? (Heb.11:30)
- 2. The lepers were able to see the hand of God only after stepping out (Verses 5-8)
- We will be surprised to see what God does!
- VI. Encourage Others With the Victory That You Have Found (7:9-16)
- 1. It’s not right to keep the encouragement and work of the Lord all to our selves (Verses 9-11)
- 2. When others see what God has done for you they will be encouraged to go and do the same (Verses 12-16)
- VII. During the Famine Live in Such a Way that You Will Not Regret it Later (7:17-20)
- 1. This officer regretted that he ever doubted the Lord
- He could see it but not partake in it.
